FIRST: Each of us need to reach out to our friends and neighbors and make sure that everyone gets the message: be informed (Vote411.org) and get voting (learn more at Vote.org or if you are registered here in Lee County, lee.vote). SECOND: Get educated! We have partnered with ourlocal non-partisan organizations on 2 programs scheduled this month that will help you learn more about potential legislative changes on the ballot or changes that are being supported by candidates. Saturday, September 19: We have joined the LWV of Lee County, SCCF, and the Calusa Group of the Sierra Club for "Our Waters, our Vote" a Southwest Florida Water Summit, September 19, 2-4 PM ET at the Collaboratory in Fort Myers (and virtual). This program brings together longstanding protectors of our local waters, and will help all of us take action to protect this critical resource. The flyer is below, and you can register here. Wednesday, September 30: We have joined with the Committee of the Islands (COTI) for a program on 2026 Ballot Constitutional Amendment 3 which proposes reductions in Homesteaded property taxes. Our League, along with the LWV of Florida believe that this Amendment would inappropriately shift revenue decisions to the State away from cities like Sanibel, and will have significant impact on revenue Statewide and locally. You can read the League’s position here. City Council member and former President of the Florida League of Cities Holly Smith will be sharing some important facts about the impact of this potential legislation, along with John Lai from the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce who will focus on impacts to our local businesses and nonprofits. The flyer is below, and you can register here. There are so many threats actively being levied against our Country's Constitution now that it seems everyday (and sometimes every hour) brings another insult to our Democracy. It's important to NOT turn away and instead take action to protect our 250 year old heritage. Use these opportunities to educate yourself, your neighbors, and the politicians WHO WORK FOR YOU! Did you know that your LWV membership helps fund the lawsuits the LWV continues to file to ensure we all get the right to have our vote counted? That includes the important lawsuit that is currently (as of Sep 4) STOPPING the changes outlined in the President's Executive Order on Mail-in Voting, and being implemented by the USPS. So just by being a member, you are actively doing something to protect our Democracy! In League, Cathie p.s. Thanks for your great responses to our Survey! Look for some changes to come. Speaking of which - our newsletter format is new - email us to tell us what you think about the new format. Now, more than ever, we need each other and we need the League of Women Voters. Thanks for being part of this organization! ![]() |
