Keyanna-Joy,

I wanted to get this breaking news update to you as quickly as possible because so many of you have been calling, signing the petition, and praying.

We received some encouraging news from Ottawa today, with an important caveat.

BREAKING:

The federal government has announced that it will introduce legislation this fall to stop the scheduled expansion of MAiD when mental illness is the sole underlying medical condition.

WATCH VIDEO HERE

While they chose not to support C-218, they committed to bringing forward their own bill on the matter.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser was very complimentary of MP Tamara Jansen, thanking her for raising the important issue.

Though C-218 was defeated (Opposed 187 - In Favour 141), this is still a victory for the protection of Canadians who struggle with mental illness.

That protection is what we have been fighting for!

YOU made almost 8,000 phone calls in the last week alone (!!!)...Your voices HAVE BEEN HEARD.

Thank you for acting.

YOU made a difference.

However, there are TWO important things to point out:

Firstly, the Liberals need to follow through, which we will be encouraging them to do through our ongoing petition, which sends an automated message to key Liberal MPs.

In that automated message, we will be encouraging them to follow through on their promise to stop the expansion of MAiD to the mentally ill.

Please sign this online petition if you have not already, and encourage others to do so as well.

POINT TO WATCH:

Secondly, the government's forthcoming bill will also likely include approval for advance requests for MAiD — potentially allowing provinces and territories to establish systems where someone could request MAiD while they still have decision-making capacity, for circumstances in which they later lose that capacity.

The danger is this: someone may give advance consent for MAiD, but later change their mind. If, at that point, they are unable to clearly communicate their wishes, there is a risk that MAiD could proceed even though they no longer want it. Chilling.

So, while we are very encouraged by today's announcement regarding mental illness, there is still much to watch, pray about, and engage on.

To every one of you who called MPs, signed the petition, shared information, and prayed: thank you.

Today is an encouraging reminder that Canadians speaking up can make a difference.
