PAMANA Honors Writer Nick Joaquin at Milwaukee FilAm History Month Event

Last Saturday's symposium, Sining ng Panahon ("Arts of the Era"), was organized by various Filipino organizations in Wisconsin, including PAMANA. It provided conversations on how the different disciplines of art reflect the Philippines' socioeconomic and political environment.

PAMANA led the literary arts segment, with board member Floresa Balondo discussing the legacy of Nick Joaquin (1917-2004), a journalist and novelist regarded as the most distinguished Filipino writer in the English language.

PAMANA also set up a booth featuring books by Filipino and Filipino American authors, including Joaquin's "The Woman Who Had Two Navels," which Floresa presented during the event.

PAMANA Receives Governor's Proclamation

Also during last Saturday's event, PAMANA received a plaque bearing a copy of Gov. Tony Evers's proclamation that declared October 2025 as Filipino American History Month.

The Governor's proclamation, dated Oct. 6, 2025, was later followed by the Wisconsin Legislature's joint passing of a resolution on Oct. 17, 2025, that also recognized October as Filipino American History Month.

This was the first time the State Assembly and Senate made this proclamation. Rep. Angelito Tenorio of West Allis, the first Filipino American in the Wisconsin Legislature, introduced the resolution.
