Nothing alive grows without rest

Calling Up Justice, in the spirit of Disability Justice and sustainability, has begun scheduling a full week of rest each quarter. Our practice is often responding to national moments of crisis while also holding regular development and management meetings, producing large cultural gatherings tied to justice-based dates, and offering consultations with partner organizations on their timelines. We are committed to working on crip time—but too often that has translated into periods of heroic push labor to meet overlapping demands. While collaboration is meant to distribute labor, in practice it can mean no one fully steps away because projects are always in motion and we want to remain present with one another. This year, we are choosing a different path. Each quarter, everything shuts down: no meetings, no deadlines, no production. Scheduling rest—collectively and unapologetically—is giving us life. It is challenging. It is necessary. And it is an essential part of building a practice that can last.
