Good Times and Great Rides

June has arrived and, as always, the Hub is buzzing with activity. May has brought plenty to celebrate; our 4th birthday, a visit from the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Mayor, a great turn out of cyclists at the fantastic Good Times festival, as well as our usual maintenance courses and Hub Club!

We're excited to be able to continue to provide the Wheels 2 Work scheme, supported by South Gloucestershire Council, and to support this we're pleased to welcome the return of qualified mechanic Rupert from Frome Bike Project to our workshop. Welcome back Rupert!

As we head into summer, there are many more adventures ahead, with a YCBH team taking on the challenge of the 'Chase the Sun' coast to coast ride; please check out the Just Giving page here and donate if you can. With sunnier times, it's worth a reminder to make sure you're fully equipped with enough hydration and sun protection while riding in the warmer temperatures.

As always, if you're looking for some advice or a new route, we'd love to see you in the Hub where you can find lots of maps and our volunteers are always willing to share their experiences too!

A visit from the WECA Mayor

We were thrilled to welcome the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Mayor, Helen Godwin, to the Hub in May and share what makes it so special.

The visit gave us the chance to showcase not just the bikes, but the people behind the Hub - the volunteers, supporters and wider community who make it such a great space.

During the visit, the Mayor met volunteers, learned more about the work we do to repair and recycle bikes as well as hearing first-hand about how the Hub supports people to travel by bike safely and confidently.

A special thank you goes to volunteer Chris for arranging the visit and helping make it happen. We really appreciate the time and effort involved in bringing opportunities like this to the Hub.

Good Times

Did you spot us at the Good Times festival again this year?

It was brilliant to see so many people choosing to travel actively and sustainably and our team was on hand to make cycling to the festival easy, secure and stress-free.

From the first arrivals to the final bikes collected, the bike parking area was busy with festival-goers embracing two wheels as part of their Good Times experience.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, travelled by bike and helped make the event such a positive, community-focused experience. We love being able to support local events that bring people together while encouraging greener ways to travel.

Old Sodbury Village Day

Join us at Old Sodbury Village Day on Saturday 6th June where we'll be talking all things bike. Pop by to say hello to our volunteers, find out about our loan bikes or our maintenance courses.

Chase the Sun

This summer four determined volunteers will race the sun across the country from Minster on Sea to Weston Super Mare to raise funds for Yate Community Bike Hub. Adrian, George, Nicola and Rebecca will be attempting to cycle over 100 miles each to relay their way across England on the 20th June aiming to get to Weston before sundown.

Yate Community Bike Hub is a non-profit dedicated to helping more people access bikes as an economical, healthy and fun way to get around. Powered by a team of awesome volunteers we refurbish unwanted bikes and gift them to those in need. but we are so much more than a bike recycling workshop! We support our community to keep cycling by providing FREE maintenance classes, Rusty Rider Training, Dr Bike sessions, bike and equipment loans, advice, affordable bikes and kit, social rides, youth sessions, work experience and supported placements for young people with learning difficulties and at risk of isolation.

If you are able to spare some change to help the Hub to continue to support our community we'd be so grateful - This summer four determined volunteers will race the sun across the country from Minster on Sea to Weston Super Mare to raise funds for Yate Community Bike Hub. Newly reformed Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club

We were pleased to see the revival of Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club in May and share their article below.

"History Repeats Itself as an Illuminated ‘Bimble’ Celebrates Relaunch of Historic Local Cycling Club

BITTON, South Gloucestershire – On the warm, sunlit evening of Thursday 21 May 2026, the newly reformed Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club (BOCC) took to the paths for its inaugural event: a spectacular, twilight Lantern Ride from Bitton Station to Bath. The event perfectly captured the club’s strict "bimble" philosophy—favouring a slow pace, social connection, and inclusivity over speed and competition.

The evening was a deliberate tribute to the area's rich social history. Originally active from 1888 to 1918, the historic club was a pillar of the local community. This month's event directly mirrored a famous Lantern Ride undertaken by the original members in 1892, which journeyed from The British School in Oldland to The Grange in Bitton.

Twenty-six local riders participated in the revival, steering a vibrant array of bicycles beautifully decorated with flowers and twinkling lights. Bringing an extra touch of floral magic to the peloton was Gary Brown from Wild About Flowers in Keynsham, who pedalled along on a stunning, flower-decked cargo bike.

"Our goal is to build a sanctuary for social cycling. True to our philosophy of the bimble: nobody’s left behind, and every mile we pedal is focused on mental wellbeing, reducing loneliness, and building community confidence"

Steve Cox, Chair, Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club

The group enjoyed a leisurely, scenic ride along the Bristol Bath Railway Path, arriving to a warm welcome by the team at the Electric Bear Taproom in Bath. After a relaxed stop for refreshment and good conversation, the riders returned as the sun dipped below the horizon. The procession sparkled through the twilight, aided by a specially provided 360° telescopic seat-post mounted light from Hi-Tail, ensuring maximum visibility and safety.

The group arrived back at Bitton Station around 9:00 pm, safe, connected, and true to their strict ‘no-drop’ policy.

With 85 members signed up in only 3 months since its relaunch, BOCC is actively campaigning for safer rural cycling infrastructure while growing a friendly, accessible space for cyclists of all abilities and equipment levels.
