Partnership in Bloom

Dear DIG Farm supporters,

August Spotlight: Our Partnership with First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Vernon

Our collaboration with First Presbyterian continues to flourish—garden, kitchen, and community all growing stronger together. Volunteers tend the thriving community garden, cook healthy meals for donation through Cooking for Community, and help make the Mt. Vernon Farmers Market a lively gathering place. Our next market is Saturday, August 22—we’d love to see you there! We’re still welcoming additional vendors and always need volunteers to help make market days a success.

A big shout-out to sisters Beverly and Marcia Morgan for their ongoing efforts and partnership—we love you!

This summer we teamed up with For the People and Kids for a weekly garden & cooking program with YCOP campers at Holmes Elementary. Children learn how to harvest, cook, and discover where food comes from.

We’re excited to launch our first library programming through the Westchester Library System in August—another way we’re expanding environmental and food education while strengthening community connection.

Don’t miss our Trivia Night Fundraiser! Join us on Saturday, August 15 at the farm. Grab your team for a fun evening supporting us.

Today we’re sharing another DIG Farm Youth Academy favorite: Blueberry Blaze Jam—a bright, summer-sweet preserve the kids love to make (and taste!). Recipe below.

Looking ahead: September brings our first-ever Doggy Adoption Day at the farm—held in honor of our late beloved Dick Button. Watch for more details soon!

Thank you for growing with us. Whether you’re shopping at the markets, lending a hand, joining a class, or just staying in touch—we’re so glad you’re here.

All the details are below and in the calendar!

Blueberry Blaze Jam

A DIG Farm Youth Academy favorite — made with blueberries harvested right here on the farm!

Bright, sweet, and just a little tangy, this simple jam captures the taste of summer in a jar. Perfect on toast, stirred into yogurt, or spooned over ice cream.

Makes about 3–4 half-pint jars

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh DIG Farm blueberries
  • 2 cups sugar (or a bit less if you prefer it less sweet)
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (optional, for extra brightness)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional for a firmer set: 1 grated apple or 1–2 Tbsp powdered pectin

Instructions

  1. Rinse the blueberries and place them in a heavy-bottomed pot. Mash lightly with a potato masher or the back of a fork, leaving some berries whole for texture.
  2. Add the sugar, lemon juice, zest (if using), salt, and your choice of grated apple or powdered pectin (if using). Stir well and let sit for 10–15 minutes so the berries begin to release their juices.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. Reduce heat to a lively simmer and cook for 15–20 minutes (a few minutes less if using pectin), stirring frequently, until the jam thickens and looks glossy.
(Tip: To test readiness, place a small spoonful on a cold plate — if it wrinkles when you push it with your finger, it’s done.)
  4. Remove from heat and skim off any foam. Ladle into clean jars, leaving about ¼-inch headspace.
  5. Let cool, then refrigerate. It will keep for 2–3 weeks in the fridge, or process in a water bath for longer storage.

Youth Academy note: The children love harvesting, helping mash the berries and testing the “wrinkle” — pure summer joy in a jar!

Happy foraging and preserving!
