Black Physicians Of Utah

July 2026

July is Summer Safety with BPOU

Heat Injury and Heat Safety

Extreme heat can be deadly and is becoming more common due to climate change. The Red Cross recommends preparing by staying hydrated, stocking emergency supplies, and planning ways to stay cool, like using air conditioning or visiting cooling centers. It's important to recognize signs of heat-related illness, limit outdoor activities, wear lightweight clothing, and check on vulnerable people. After a heat wave, focus on recovery and seek support if needed.

 Public Health Corner

Suicide prevention starts with understanding, trust, and open conversations.

This research, conducted in partnership with the University of Utah and Black Physicians of Utah, explores ways to prevent firearm suicide deaths among Black adults by identifying barriers to care and strategies for improving firearm safety conversations in healthcare settings. The findings highlight the importance of culturally responsive care, community collaboration, and building trust to support those at risk better.

Together, we can advance research, reduce stigma, and create safer, healthier communities.
