Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered with us, donated, or supported us in any way in 2025. Building these special circumstance homes truly wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing Esperanza community. Each of the three families was facing different challenges, including precarious living conditions and illnesses. We hope you’re moved by the before-and-after photos below—seeing the families and the difference you helped make in providing a safe, accessible, and dignified home.

Our first completed special circumstance home was Lourdes and her stepson Ernesto. On the left, you can see the house they used to live in. Due to her stepson’s health conditions, her earnings have gone towards his treatment and care. Thanks to the amazing support of our incredible community, we were able to help make their dream of a safe, dignified home come true.

Next, Karla and her kids finally see their dream of having a real home come true. They were living in an unstable situation as shown on the left. Karla has been part of our home-building program for several years, but because of a medical condition and ongoing health issues, she wasn’t able to start the building process. With the incredible support of our volunteers, donors, and the Lomas de Valle community, Karla and her children now have a safe home today.

Last but not least, Alicia was our third special circumstance recipient. Their house pictured on the left was in precarious condition—Alicia and her children shared a single room, and the structure offered little protection during cold or rainy seasons. She is a widow, taking care of her two children both with difficult health challenges. Today, Alicia and her family now have a home to live safely in.

We’re excited to have you join us for a truly inspiring project this year: building a new community center in Lomas De Valle! Lomas De Valle is a community made up entirely of Esperanza families and home recipients. For Esperanza, building community—not just homes—has always been at the heart of our mission. The residents of Lomas De Valle have shared their excitement about the new opportunities a shared space will bring. As shown below, the community center will include multipurpose rooms, a library, a consultation room, and a music/dance studio.

Thanks to your incredible support during our 40th Anniversary Fundraiser, we’re eager to begin construction on this special project with the help of our groups this year!

“This year I got to travel to Tijuana to help build a home for Juan's family, and it was one of those trips that just stays with you.

The coolest part was that this wasn't our first time crossing paths with Juan. He actually worked alongside us last year in Primo Tapia when we helped build Angelica and her partner's home. So getting to show up for HIS family this time felt so special.

On top of that, we got to see Angelica's finished house — the same concrete we poured, now decorated with the most beautiful colorful tiles around the windows that the family had added themselves. We all just stood there so proud. It went from a build site to a real home.

And Juan's family? They showed up for US too. While we were out there shoveling, they made us the most incredible food. I'm still thinking about the agua de jamaica — so refreshing and made with so much love.

That's what I love most about this work. It's not just about building walls and pouring concrete. It's the relationships built over years, the families who remember our names, the feeling of being welcomed in. Watching these families build community with each other and with us — year after year — is something I feel really lucky to be a part of.

Can't wait to see Juan's home finished one day and remember that we helped lay that foundation.”

Our long-term volunteers help play an important role in making positive connections between and with the groups and families in Esperanza's home building program. The Esperanza Team had a wonderful and productive meeting during our annual Board Retreat at La Posada in February. Both boards, Esperanza International and Fundación Esperanza de México, met to plan for the year ahead! Thank you to our board members and staff for these important conversations and commitment to our mission. We're looking forward to another year of building dignity together with you all!
