Historic Capitol Celebration Honors Legacy of PAMANA, Filipino Americans in WI

This year's Filipino American History Month celebration culminated with a program at the State Capitol on Oct. 29, a historic first for the state of Wisconsin.

Led by Rep. Angelito Tenorio, the event included special remarks from PAMANA's Vice President, Mary Kerr, who shared the organization's history and impact in Wisconsin's social, cultural and educational institutions.

Mary Kerr delivers PAMANA's special remarks.

PAMANA also received a copy of the 2025 Assembly Joint Resolution 98, which proclaimed October 2025 as Filipino American History Month. This was the first time the Wisconsin Legislature made a proclamation honoring this celebration.

Joint PAMANA-FASO Gathering Discusses 1904 St. Louis World's Fair

Dr. Fernandez gives a talk at UW-Madison and receives plaque of special appreciation from PAMANA and FASO.

One of PAMANA's final events for this month's celebration was its tradition of jointly hosting an activity with the Filipinx American Students Association (FASO) at UW-Madison

Upon PAMANA and FASO's invitation, Dr. Juan Fernandez, Assistant Professor of Southeast Asian History, gave an engaging talk on the significance of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

Presenting archival photos and illustrations, Dr. Fernandez discussed stories of native and indigenous Filipinos who were part of the "human exhibit" in Missouri more than 120 years ago.

The talk was held at the Multicultural Student Center on Oct. 28. PAMANA extends its gratitude to Dr. Fernandez and FASO for the successful collaboration.

Postscript: Filipino American History Month

We celebrate this occasion in October to honor the month of the first recorded arrival of Asians—a crew of Filipinos—in what is now considered U.S. mainland territory.

But what happened after the Filipino pioneers' landing?

The inscription of this event's historical marker in Morro Bay, California provides some details:

"On October 18, 1587, the Manila Galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza commanded by Pedro de Unamuno entered Morro Bay near here. A landing party was sent to shore which included Luzon Indios, marking the first landing of Filipinos in the continental United States. The landing party took official possession of the area for Spain by putting up a cross made of branches. The group was attacked by native Indians two days later, and one of the Filipinos was killed. Unamuno and his crew gave up further exploration of this part of the coast."
