NO JULY MEETING

Eastside Games

Greetings Springdale,

SASS Master Kevin here to let you know the Eastside Games are upon us!  Year One of Springdale's Athletic and Social Society ended in our first championship, and we don't want to give the trophy back!

We shocked the usual winners with our incredible turnout, and I expect they will be getting their rosters ready to meet us at every event.  If you are free from June 20-27, I hope you'll join the fun and help Springdale retain.

Here are a few more facts about the competition.

  • All ages, all skill levels welcome - Every event has Youth (13 and under), Adult, and Senior (50+) medals to earn, and there are often separate men's and women's competitions.  Our kids and seniors really stole the show for us!
  • Register at the event - Except for Golf and Pickleball, no prior registration is needed.  Just show up, find the medal table, and tell them which neighborhood you are competing for
  • It is all free to play and very fun
  • Not a member of SASS yet?  Email me at kmsawrie@gmail.com and you can join the crew
  • The website is surprisingly good - if you've got more questions you can send them to me, or you can check out the website at http://www.edingames.com/. There you can find the locations, times, and rules of events.  You can also register if you want to do the cooking competition or pickleball

Our neighborhood rules and it's time to prove it, again!  See you there.

Spring (?) Clean-Up

With the rain crashing our party in April, we had to reschedule. And then we realized it was Pride Parade & Festival day! SO we had to reschedule again!

Thank you everyone for your flexibility.

Springdale Soil & Spades

It's Rachel again. Current SNA President, roommate of The Temple Oak, and Purdue Extension Master Gardener Intern.

Today, let's talk soil - and why it's definitely not the same thing as dirt. While the words are used interchangeably, there are differences. Soil is a complex ecosystem that supports plant life and growth, while dirt can't. Dirt is what makes you dirty, what gets under your fingernails or on your clothes. Dirt is in the soil, but it's just one component of it. Soil has 4 key components; 45% minerals (where that dirt lives), 5% organic matter, 25% water, and 25% air.

What kind of mineral makeup of soil are we dealing with right here in Springdale? If you've ever tried to dig a hole in mid-July and felt you hit concrete, you have felt our clay. We are specifically on Miami silt loam or heavy clay loam. (source)

Want to learn more? Check out this Soil Basics Playlist from Purdue Extension.

We can't change our geological history, but we can improve the 5% organic matter in our soil. Top dress your garden beds with compost, shredded leaves, or mulch. Over time, earthworms and microbes will work that organic matter down into the clay, breaking up those tight bonds, improving drainage, and creating an environment that plants crave (not Brawndo).

You could also choose native Indiana plants as a GREAT shortcut. Their deep, powerful root systems are perfectly adapted to bust right through our heavy local clay soil.

More to come on native plants later,

Happy planting, neighbors!

Pride Temple Oak Tree Decorating

It might not be the oldest, it might not be the largest, but it is the queerest tree in Indy!

Help us kick off Indy Pride weekend in style. Come over for a casual hang, and let's decorate the tree to show that Springdale welcomes all.

When: 06/12 Friday at 7:00

Where: The Temple Oak

Have a fun idea? Send it over or bring supplies!

No sprouts this month. Got a sprout to shout? Reply to this email, we'd love to tell the world (or at least Springdale)!
