Bison Ice Sport Association – Topeka Scarecrows Booster Club
June Update

Hello Booster Club Members,

As we move into the summer months, there is plenty happening behind the scenes as we continue building the future of hockey and ice sports in Topeka.

Topeka House League Discussions Underway

We are excited to announce that Bison Ice Sports Association has entered into discussions with KCYHA regarding the establishment of a Topeka House League. While there are still many details to work through, the conversations have been positive and productive. Our goal remains to create more opportunities for local players and families to participate in hockey right here at home.

Nothing is finalized yet, but if everything comes together, we will make an official announcement. Stay tuned!

Golf Tournament Set

Our annual golf tournament is officially on the calendar. We will be discussing tournament details, sponsorship opportunities, volunteer needs, and registration information at this month's membership meeting. This event is an important fundraiser for our organization, and we look forward to another great turnout.

Stuff-the-Bus Welcome Home Drive

The Topeka Scarecrows will be returning to town on October 10th or 11th, and we want to make sure they receive the welcome they deserve.

We will coordinate a "Stuff-the-Bus" community drive to support our players as they return for the season. More details will be released in the coming months, but we encourage everyone to start thinking about ways they can help.

One thing that has always set this organization apart is that we are more than fans—we are family. And families take care of each other.

Away Booster Trips

Plans are already underway for our away-game booster trips during the upcoming season. Potential destinations, travel options, and scheduling will be discussed at this month's meeting. If you've ever wanted to travel with fellow Scarecrows supporters and cheer on the team on the road, now is the time to get involved.

Build the RINK Campaign Continues

We recently launched our multi-year "Build the RINK" fundraising initiative to bring a permanent, full-time sheet of ice to our community.

The response so far has been encouraging and represents an important first step toward making this vision a reality. While there is still much work ahead, the momentum is growing, and we are excited to discuss next steps and future fundraising efforts at the upcoming meeting.

Thank you to everyone who continues to volunteer, donate, advocate, and support our mission. Together, we are building something special for hockey, ice sports, and future generations in Topeka.

See you at the meeting!

Thinking About Joining?

We’re always looking for new members, new ideas, and new energy.
Come be part of building something special and help grow the love of hockey and ice sports in our community.

Youth Hockey

We are looking for Coaches

Coaching a youth hockey team is a fantastic way to give back to the sport, mentor young athletes, and build a strong sense of community. If you are ready to hit the ice as a coach, you will need to complete several mandatory certifications and follow a few specific steps to ensure a safe, organized environment.

Core Coaching Motivations

People are drawn to coaching for a variety of fulfilling reasons:

  • Mentorship & Development: Helping kids develop not just as hockey players, but as resilient, confident, and respectful individuals.
  • Giving Back: Sharing a passion for the game and passing on the skills and life lessons learned from past coaches.
  • Community Building: Fostering a positive, inclusive team environment for both the players and their families.

Standard Requirements & Certifications

Hockey organizations require a few baseline qualifications:

  1. USA Hockey Membership: You must register annually as a member.
  2. Background Screen: A mandatory background check, typically valid for two seasons.
  3. SafeSport Training: An online training module designed to keep players safe from all forms of abuse and misconduct.
  4. Coaching Education Program (CEP): You will need to complete the appropriate level of coaching clinics (Levels 1 through 4) depending on the age group you are coaching.
  5. If you or someone you know is interested in helping coach this upcoming season in our Jr Scarecrows program, please contact Coaching Director Jason Simonsen @ 785-224-7756 to find out how to get involved.
