From the President’s Desk: Honoring Women’s History Month

As we celebrate Women's History Month and recognize International Women's Day on March 8, we pause to honor the extraordinary achievements, leadership, and lasting impact of women who continue to shape our communities, our professions, and the proud legacy of Morgan State University.

This month provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize the strength, resilience, and influence of Morgan women who lead, mentor, and inspire across generations. Their commitment to excellence and service reflects the very spirit of Morganlifting others while advancing opportunity for those who follow.

March also brings the excitement of the MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, a time when Morganites everywhere come together in pride and support of our Bears. It is always inspiring to see our alumni community rally around Morgan with the same passion and pride that defines our university.

Your engagement whether through volunteering, sharing your talents, supporting our initiatives, or simply staying connected helps sustain the legacy and impact of the Morgan community.

As we prepare for upcoming chapter activities, we are seeking volunteers to serve on committees that support our programs, scholarships, and alumni engagement efforts. If you are interested in getting involved, we warmly welcome your leadership and participation.

Thank you for continuing to represent Morgan with pride and purpose. Together, we honor our legacy while creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of Bears.💙🧡🐻

Forever Morgan, Morgan Forever

Women’s History Month:
Honoring Black Women Alumni of HBCUs

Women’s History Month offers a powerful opportunity to celebrate the resilience, leadership, and excellence of Black women especially those shaped by the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). For the Morgan State University NJ Alumni Chapter, this month is a time to spotlight the remarkable women alumni whose impact continues to strengthen our communities, professions, and the Morgan legacy.

HBCUs have long been incubators of brilliance for Black women, providing not only academic preparation but also cultural affirmation, mentorship, and a deep sense of purpose. Morgan women exemplify this tradition. They are educators molding future generations, healthcare professionals advancing equity in patient care, entrepreneurs creating jobs and opportunities, and civic leaders advocating for justice and progress.

Morgan State University’s legacy is reflected in the extraordinary women who paved the way for future generations. Among them is Juanita Jackson Mitchell, the first African American woman to practice law in Maryland and a fearless advocate for civil rights. Dr. Rosalyn Terborg-Penn was a renowned scholar whose groundbreaking research centered Black women in the history of the suffrage movement. Paula Roberts has served at the highest levels of federal leadership as Chief Human Capital Officer for the U.S. Intelligence Community and NGA Equality Executive. T. J. Bryan made history as the first female president of Fayetteville State University. Ida R. Cummings broke barriers as Baltimore’s first Black kindergarten teacher, while Lillie Jackson led the Baltimore NAACP for decades, shaping local and national civil rights efforts.

Beyond individual accomplishments, Black women alumni of Morgan State University are culture keepers and change agents. They mentor students, lead alumni initiatives, uplift families, and reinvest in institutions that helped shape them.

This Women’s History Month, the Morgan State University NJ Alumni Chapter proudly honors the Black women who continue to lead with courage, serve with purpose, and advance the enduring legacy of Dear Old Morgan.
