News for the Alberta Publisher

Message from the Executive Director

Hello, BPAA members and colleagues,

Like many of our members, the BPAA staff have been busy the last few weeks completing many grant applications and final reports. I hope you all can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Submissions for Alberta Books for Schools closed last week, and the curriculum mappers from The Alberta Library are busy reading and reviewing every submission. The new titles will be added to the database in the fall. While we won’t have a designed catalogue this year, we will be sending out e-blasts throughout the year to educators and librarians to ensure the resource remains top-of-mind.

Jackie is attending the MacEwan Bookwyrm SpecFest on Friday on behalf of the BPAA. Bookwyrm is a student-led festival that aims to unite Alberta’s emerging speculative fiction writers with local literary professionals for a day of community connection and skill development. Jackie will be hosting the BPAA’s booth and sharing information about the publishing industry in Alberta.

We are also very excited to be working with Derek Evernden on new merch for the Read Alberta website. A reminder to BPAA members: if you have in-person events coming up, please let us know so that we can share the new materials with you.

All the best,

Megan Bishop
Executive Director

2026 BPAA Annual Conference - Call for Library Speakers

The BPAA is looking to coordinate a session at this year’s annual conference that will highlight successful partnerships/initiatives between local libraries and publishers.

The call for submissions is open through Thursday, March 26, 2026. This opportunity has been shared through the library Listserv, but we are looking for additional opportunities to amplify this call. I’ve included some additional information below; the full call can be viewed here.

For this session, we would like to feature partnerships/initiatives between local libraries and publishers, with special areas of interest being successful events, collaboration in providing accessible materials, and marketing initiatives. Examples could include book clubs featuring locally published books, unique events planned around specific books, and initiatives that increase access to local books for readers with barriers. We welcome submissions from public and academic librarians.

If there is any library you feel would be a good fit for this opportunity, we encourage you to share the submission form with them. If there are any initiatives you’ve been a part of that could be highlighted as part of this session, please email jpitt@bookpublishers.ab.ca.

Books BC Welcomes New Executive Director

Message from Books BC Board Chair, Laraine Coates.

I am delighted to announce that Sarah Felkar will be joining the association as our new Executive Director, starting April 7, 2026.

Sarah comes to us from the library world where she has served, most recently, as Assistant Director and Head of Technology at the West Vancouver Memorial Library. She was also the Interim Executive Director of the BC Libraries Cooperative from 2024-2025 where she worked behind the scenes on the Read Local BC eBookshelf project.

Since 2007, Sarah has worked in public libraries and gained additional experience in academic and special libraries. She is passionate about digital content, equity, literacy, and building connections. Digital literacy and community consultation has been central to her work. She has experience meeting with MLAs and advocating for the libraries with the BC government, has served on a number of professional committees and boards, and has also secured grants and other funding from diverse sources, often by building partnerships across the sector.

We are so looking forward to working with Sarah to continue to build connections across the BC-book ecosystem, to increase the visibility of BC independent publishers with government and the public, and, overall, to further strengthen the independent book-publishing industry in BC.

Please join me in welcoming Sarah to Books BC!

Nova Scotia government’s claim to support province’s publishers “100% false”

The Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association (APMA) released a statement stating that the Nova Scotia government’s claim that it continues to support the province’s local book publishers is "100% false." The 2026-2027 provincial budget eliminates the Nova Scotia Publisher Assistance Program, making Nova Scotia the only province in Canada that doesn’t have dedicated funding for local book publishing.

While the government pointed to the Nova Scotia Loyal Book Voucher pilot as evidence of support, the APMA notes that the one-time, short-term initiative does not replace the $700,000 foundational program that supported publishers directly.

The Association continues to call on the province to reinstate the Publisher Assistance Program and ensure sustainable investment in the companies that bring Nova Scotia’s stories to readers at home and around the world.

Canadian Children's Book Centre launches Kids Book News

B.C. Government Makes Book Publishing Tax Credit Permanent

The Association of Book Publishers of B.C. (Books BC) is celebrating the news that the provincial Book Publishing Tax Credit is to be made permanent, effective March 31, 2026.

First introduced in 2003, the Book Publishing Tax Credit has played a crucial role in ensuring the survival and fostering the growth of British Columbia’s vibrant, world-class publishing sector. With the removal of the “sunset clause,” the tax credit becomes a permanent support, allowing publishers to navigate supply-chain challenges, maintain competitiveness with out-of-province firms, and capitalize their operations based on predictable funding.

This decision follows the removal in recent years of the sunset clause from both the Film and Television Tax Credit and the Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit.
