Park Employee Spotlight: Dan Urkevich,
Parks and Recreation Specialist

by Kathy Dugan

Dan’s official title does not do him justice, in my opinion. I think of him as the Master of the Gardens or The Garden Maestro. I had the privilege to interview Dan on June 4 when the gardens out front were almost done being planted. The plants were so much smaller than they are now, only two weeks later, living proof of the rapid changes that occur here during the growing season.

Dan has been working at the park since 1978, all because a friend needed a ride to work. He put in an application because he thought the park looked like a nice place. He started as a greenskeeper on the state run golf courses planting flowers around all the tee boxes. When the golf courses became privatized, he moved to work on the park gardens.

Standing by the garden at the Route 9 entrance, Dan said, “This used to be nothing.” That all changed in 2000, when the garden space as we know it today was created. Dan has been working on these gardens ever since and says his goal is make each garden better than the previous one.

The Friends are extremely grateful to Dan for all his help in providing a temporary home for our five (5) live holiday trees in the south front garden until they were moved into the permanent location this spring.

Weekly Invasive Species and Garden Work Continues

Join us in the garden on Mondays and Wednesdays mornings as we maintain a few of the beautiful spaces in the park.

Help us on Thursday mornings as we tackle invasive species in seven (7) ecologically important areas. For more information see our committee pages on our website.

Starter's Station Update

We have almost completed our refresh of the Par 29 Golf Course starter's station. We are searching for a 32" x 80" exterior door to replace the existing one. Let us know if you have one you'd like to donate at golf@friendsofsaratogaspastatepark.org

Visit Us at the Farmers' Market

We have a table at the Spa City Farmer's Market on the last Sunday of each month. Stop by to say hello and chat with members of our group.

First 2026 Tennis Fundraising Tourney Held

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported our “Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park Mixed Doubles Tourney," held on June 3. A little rain didn't dampen the spirits of the many players. A big thank you to our volunteer tennis players who are work countless hours on maintaining our pristine tennis courts all season long. Check out our Tennis Committee webpage to see who won!

Park News & Updates

Saratoga Spa State Park important updates:

  • Roads: The Ave. of the Pines entrance to the warming hut road is newly paved.
  • Pools: Both pools are now open daily from 10:00-6:00. To clear up any confusion, the height requirement for the water slides remains at 48 inches. The Learn to Swim program is in full swing and is in it's second two week session.
  • Programming: Our education team hosted several field trips as the school year came to a close. Many fun events are planned for the rest of the summer. See the Friends website calendar page for events.
  • Spa City Farmers' Market: Now open Thursdays from 4:00-7:00 pm through September in addition to the regular Sunday hours.
  • Employee Commendation: Immediate emergency response by Victoria Pool lifeguards, Audra Davis, Carter Wood and Maddy Wood, during Father’s Day weekend on the Spa Championship Golf Course is to be commended. Their willingness to respond quickly and knowledge of first aid is an asset to the park that we can be proud of.
  • Bald Eagle Sighting: First ever sighting by a park staff member happened along the Geyser Creek in June during a field trip. Roslyn Hart-Wurst, Educational Educator, shared these photos:
